Taking a break and walking along the college ‘Backs’ is always relaxing. In every weather and season it somehow looks different. A good loop starts at Queen’s Mathematical Bridge, goes past the famous view of King’s College, past Clare, Trinity, St John’s and then loops back around past Magdalene back into the city centre.

We do not have far to go to find countryside (and some cows) and feel like you have escaped the city (and your desk). Walk along the river through the Grantchester meadows made famous by the poet Rupert Brooke and Pink Floyd. Bring a picnic or stop in at the Orchard Cafe and pretend you’re Virginia Woolf for a moment.

Need a stroll away from College? Follow the meandering river from Jesus Green, through Midsummer Common, past the Emma Boat Club, Stourbridge Common and finally Ditton Meadows (where the rowing Bumps take place). If you make it to the village of Fen Ditton keep an eye out for the rowboat weathervane on the church steeple!

Recapture a different mood with music. Cambridge has a mind-boggling number live music performances and concerts that are free or have cheap student tickets. From symphonies to jazz sessions, or something with a bit more bass.

A short walk away from College you can discover new worlds at one of the many University museums and galleries which you can visit for free from the Whipple Science Museum to the Classics Museum and more. Pop in for a quick break, or bring friends or family!

The Language Centre offers classes and other support to learn new languages for total beginners to advanced speakers. College will pay 50% of lessons; speak to your tutor for more information. There’s also other funding you can apply for.

The Centre for Music Performance offers free classes and generous bursaries for one-to-one tuition spanning a broad range of music, with a particular focus on supporting students who have previously had limited opportunities to learn.

Postgraduate Researcher Development offer workshops, 1-2-1 appointments and resources to boost your skills as a researcher, teacher and academic.

All postgraduate students and postdocs are welcome to a tutorial with a Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow. These professional writers, equipped with extensive experience, provide free support to help strengthen your writing skills.

The University’s Botanic Gardens are a short walk away from College and free for students to visit with your university card. With plants from all over the world they are worth seeing year-round.

Kettle’s Yard is the University’s modern and contemporary art gallery based around the house museum of its art-collector founder, Jim Ede. Entry to gallery is free, and entry to house is free for students with your university card.
